Ever since her big-screen debut in the cult 1980s movie Mystic Pizza, Julia Roberts has become known for two things: her dazzling smile and headline-stealing hair moments. As for the latter, she’s done it again over the weekend with her most striking look yet: a fresh lob with honey-hued layers.
Roberts’s hair evolution began with a headful of gravity-defying auburn curls that tumbled over her shoulders—a look made famous by the movie Pretty Woman.
In the ‘90s, she experimented with shorter styles including a pixie cut, a tousled platinum bob reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe, and various iterations of “The Rachel,” where her hair was coaxed into choppy jaw-length, face-framing layers.
In the years that followed, it was all about shoulder-length styles, occasionally with curls but, more often than not, worn poker straight with flippy ends and a side part in shades that seemed to ricochet between brunette, strawberry, and golden blonde.
Then in the late ’00s she settled on the long, brushed-out waves that have become her red-carpet go-to. Or so we thought.
On June 16, Julia Roberts attended a star-studded fund-raising gala in Los Angeles hosted by President Joe Biden. In a photograph that she posted to Instagram, the actor can be seen flanked by the current president, former president Barack Obama, and actor George Clooney, sporting a brand new haircut and color.

Her recent chest-sweeping auburn hair has been lopped off to reveal a shoulder-skimming layered lob, which she styled in undone waves and a center part. Julia also seems to be embracing her blonde roots (yes, Julia Roberts’s hair is naturally blonde) for summer, with a soft honey-blonde shade that is bright but also adds warmth to the skin in a way that platinum hues do not.
With Courteney Cox also recently showcasing the hair style, the lob has reentered the conversation. But could it steal the bob’s crown for the ultimate summer haircut? Over to you, Hollywood.
