Earlier this week, Hailey Bieber stepped out for date night with hubby Justin Bieber wearing one of summer’s hottest trends: the bubble hem.
For many a millennial, this trend can trigger flashbacks to shopping at Charlotte Russe for a winter formal dress. Thankfully, 2024’s bubble hem is not 2008’s. Like Bieber’s, which appears to be a minidress with a smocked, T-shirt top, the modern bubble hem is often shorter, and less often attached to an empire-waist party dress cinched with a neon bow. IYKYK.
Bieber paired her mini with oval sunglasses and black loafers, keeping the whole look low-key but still trend-forward. Compared to the lace bodysuit or the Phoebe Philo silk dress she packed for a recent trip to New York City, this look is downright casual—a true distillation of East versus West Coast style.
So far in Hailey Bieber’s pregnancy, the model has mostly been wearing her prepregnancy clothes—an unexpected benefit, perhaps, of gravitating toward baggier silhouettes or styles with a lot of stretch. Really, she’s simply proving the theory that Rihanna absolutely changed the game for maternity style during her first and second pregnancies in 2022 and 2023. Any piece of clothing can be maternitywear if you’re crafty enough!
Hailey, may we suggest Sienna Miller’s Schiaparelli two-piece next? It’s got drama, volume, and a bubble hem!
As for the bubble hem revival, the divisive trend has clear staying power. Our editors are recommending drop-waist dresses, often with a ruched bodice, and mid- or low-rise miniskirts in lightweight cotton or satin. If you’re looking for more of a statement, you can also reach for a maxi bubble hem. It’s all about texture, weight, and having the guts to shake off the bubble hem trauma of high school dances past.
And they’re so much cuter than you remember.
